FAQ’s
- How will joining a sorority affect my daughter’s academics?
It is a proven fact that joining a sorority is more likely to have a positive effect on your daughter’s grades. A U.S. Government study found that 70% of Greeks graduate, while less that 50% of non-Greeks graduate from college. Also, a study by the University of Missouri found that Greeks are more financially successful when they after college. By joining a sorority, your daughter will be surrounded by a group of women who know the stress of being a college student. They will be there to help her adjust to her first year of college. Also, each chapter holds study halls, provides scholarships, and gives awards to encourage academic excellence. Each member is reminded that an education is the number one reason they are at Southeastern, and must maintain a specific GPA to remain a member of their sorority.
- How mush does it cost to be a member?
Each chapter requires all members to pay dues each semester. The amount of dues is different for each sorority. Also, a new member or initiation fee may also be required. A parlor fee will also be charged for each semester your daughter does not live in the sorority house. This fee goes toward utility and maintenance costs for the house. Some chapters include all expenses in their dues, but other may not. Remind your daughter to ask chapters what is included in their dues and what will cost extra. Most sororities offer scholarships or money off dues for academic achievements. Because each chapter handles its finances differently, it is important that your daughter remembers to ask each chapter about their policies regarding dues.
- Is there an alcohol policy?
Each sorority has strict rules regarding social events and alcohol. It is taken very seriously if one of these rules is violated. Southeastern also has a strict policy involving the use of alcohol, especially concerning underage drinking. All sorority houses at Southeastern are substance-free. Each year, Greek organizations participate in events that focus on alcohol education, like Mocktails.

What about hazing?
Hazing is illegal in the state of Louisiana. SLU also has a zero-tolerance policy against hazing. Any report of hazing will be investigated thoroughly, and if found guilty, action will be taken against that organization. Additionally, each sorority has national rules that prohibit hazing in any form. The Greeks at Southeastern actively work to educate the campus on the dangers of hazing with an Anti-Hazing week that is held each year.
